Broward Commissioner Lemar Fishes provides and update of county issues, progress and upcoming issues in his December newsletter. The end of the year is a great time for reflection and Broward County has a lot to brag about this year! 2025 has been a major year for our community. With a strong and growing seaport and airport, while also providing our community with the resources that are needed.

Omni Hote officially opens with 801 guests’ rooms, including 82 of the region’s largest suites. As you might have guessed, the rooms feature spectacular views of the ocean, city and/or the intracoastal. With the addition of 120,0000 square feet across three levels which help elevate the opportunities for convention space in Broward County and help bring larger conventions to our destination impacting our local economy.

Broward County’s Port Everglades continues to make incredible strides by breaking its own record across all three of its own business sectors; cruise, cargo and energy. Fort Lauderdale International Airport (FLL) is expecting about 2.1 million travelers through January 5. This year, FLL ranked No. 2 based on booking data, and a record 8.03 million domestic travelers nationwide are expected to fly to their holiday celebrations, up 2.3% from 2024.

Marty Kiar, our Property Appraiser, shares with us how the homestead exemption automatically renews each year. Forida law requires the property owner to notify the Property Appraiser of any change which may affect homestead eligibility. This “Change Order” card provides an easy way to communicate any important changes to our office. If there are NO changes to the use and/or ownership of your property, simply keep the card as your receipt that your Homestead Exemption has automatically renewed for another year. However, if there are changes, please mark the Change Order accordingly and return it to our office.

WHERE DID MY PORTABILITY SAVINGS GO?

A portability deduction is only posted to your property record page in the first year you receive your new Homestead Exemption. The portability savings from the first year form the basis of your new Save Our Homes (SOH) Value on a going forward basis and — in subsequent years — will rise or fall based upon market value changes and the SOH cap, as your new Save Our Homes value has incorporated your portability savings. When our website is updated to display subsequent year property values, your portability deduction is no longer shown independently because it is already factored into your new Assessed/Save Our Homes Value.

Broward Commissioner Lamar Fisher provides updates on county issues through his November newsletter. I want to personally congratulate Mayor Mark Bogen and Vice Mayor Robert McKinzie on their selections. Looking ahead, I’m excited for Mayor Bogen’s initiatives and look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues for the residents of District 4 and all of Broward County.

Broward County’s Animal Care celebrated a record year for Fiscal Year 2025, with more pets adopted, reunited and rescued than ever before. During the fiscal year, 3,894 pets were adopted – an increase of more than 160 animals compared to last year. Another 568 pets were reunited with their owners, a huge jump of about 31 percent. Partnerships with rescue groups also grew, helping 733 pets find second chances through transfers – nearly 200 more than the year before.

Manatee Season runs from November 15 through March 31. As weather drops, manatees begin their seasonal migration to warmer waters, bringing them south to our regional waterways. Broward County encourages residents and visitors to be especially careful when traveling in our waterways during these months.

Holiday Fantasy of Lightsis back at Tradewinds Park and Stables in Coconut Creek. Starting Saturday, November 22, the family-friendly drive-thru spectacular runs nightly, including holidays, from 6 to 10PM through Saturday, January 3, 2026.
