Consumer Price Index (CPI) & Inflation
The Current US Consumer Price Index - All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) is compiled by the Bureau of Labor Statistics monthly and is based upon a 1984 base of 100. An Index of 185 indicates 85% inflation since 1984 (actually the average of 1982-1984). Since this is an index it only tells you the total inflation since the base year. See the Historical CPI-U for the Consumer Price Index on a monthly basis since 1913. An index of 9.8 in 1913 indicates that prices multiplied over ten times from 1913 to 1982. It as doubled again from 1982 to 2006 when the index topped 200. In 2007 the Bureau of Labor Statistics began publishing the index to three decimal places.
The Current US Inflation Rate in Percent for Jan 2000 - Present is offered below. Commonly defined as the overall general upward price movement of goods and services in an economy, the Inflation rate is calculated using the Current Consumer Price Index (CPI-U) published monthly by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The below Inflation rates are calculated to two decimal places while the government only calculates inflation rates to one decimal place. Therefore, while being based on the government's index - this data provides a more accurate view. For example, government statistics show that both January and February 2005 had an inflation rate of 3%. In January however, the below data shows it as 2.97% and February shows as 3.01%. Therefore instead of the inflation rate being "flat" it is actually rising slightly. In another example, government statistics show that August and September 2003 rates were 2.2% and 2.3% respectively, fueling the belief that inflation rose .1% during that period. In actuality however, it rose from 2.16% to 2.32% or a .16% increase, substantially more than .1%!
