MINUTES OF GMCA ADVISORY BOARD MEETING

SEPTEMBER 21, 2006


The meeting was called to order at 11:00 a.m. by President Bob Rozema.

Board Members present: Rozema, Ieraci, Berkowitz, Glickfield, Gill, Alfano, Baker, Chin, Comis, Creal, Freismuth, Gilligan, Hamaker, Katkin, Kwart, Lodwick, McBride, Mayer, Nicholson-Brown, Songer, Talerico, Vanek and Zolubos

Approval of Minutes - The minutes of June 15, 2006 were approved.

Old & New Business - A moment of silence was held in memory of our long time member Helen Quinlan.

President Rozema introduced and welcomed Fort Lauderdale Commissioner Christine Teel and Broward County Commissioner Jim Scott.

Commissioner Teel shared the following:

  • She has been visiting the Mile on various occasions to monitor the progress of rehabilitation subsequent to Hurricane Wilma.
  • The lighting on the east side of the Mile has been repaired, although there are still some lighting problems being addressed.
  • Maria (Fort Lauderdale Parks Department employee with a long history of tending to Galt Mile landscaping) is still with us; her schedule was adjusted so she could remain.
  • We have a �new� police major: Mary Negrey has been promoted to Assistant Chief of the Support Service Bureau. Major Paul J. Kiley is now responsible for the overall command of police operations in District I.
  • The building on the corner of 33rd & AIA (formerly the Hamilton Gallery) that was damaged by Hurricane Wilma has been classified as �unrepairable� and needs to be demolished.
  • Commissioner Teel confirmed that she is available to attend condo meetings to answer concerns, questions, etc.
  • The Shore Club had a fire in an unoccupied unit when an absentee owner left an unattended paper shredder plugged in.
  • She shared a letter from the Fort Lauderdale Firefighters� Association regarding classes offered by the city, prompting some discussion about AED training.

Commissioner Scott reported on the following:

  • Beach Renourishment is a work in progress. Following the current 18-month monitoring period, a favorable report from Nova scholars will initiate the Segment II (Fort Lauderdale) portion of the project.
  • Budget � While he has been unable to affect a cut the budget, he successfully installed budgetary review sub-committees to enhance accountability and encourage input.
  • Following the legislature�s failure to pass a Homestead Portability bill, he engineered the placement of a referendum question on the November ballot asking Broward residents if they approve of Save our Homes Portability. Additional information will be delivered to our buildings, posted on the GMCA web site and published in the Galt Mile News. A favorable result could facilitate the passage of a portability amendment.
  • The Commissioner announced a dedication for the rebuilding of George English Park.
  • There was extensive discussion regarding insurance.

Pio explained the results of a September 11th meeting at the Ocean Club convened to address the fate of the remaining Galt Mile outfall pipes. Beach Erosion Administrator Stephen Higgins characterized their removal as critical to continued beach renourishment. The restoration of Segment II is anticipated to begin by the end of 2008

Trenches are being dug to accommodate underground wiring.

Community Center - It was reported that a mugging took place at 10:30 a.m. at the entrance to the Community Center

    • Turtle Magic - Playa del Mar resident Phyllis Carter experiences a �discovery Channel� moment. What the State sponsored �Turtle Teams� do along the Galt Mile shore to protect five endangered species.
  • August:

Correspondence - Reviewed � On the advice of Christine Teel, Bob is sending a letter to George Gretsas on behalf of Maria Torres (the hardworking Fort Lauderdale Parks employee with a long history of maintaining the Galt Mile landscaping).

Treasurer�s Report - Leah Glickfield reported $16,201.41 in our Treasury; all bills are paid.

Other Business

  • Guests: Brenda Lynn Di Ioia, running for Broward County Judge, Group 32; Ken Keechl, running for Broward County Commission District 4; and John Rayson, running for Broward County Circuit Court Judge, Group 57.
  • Discussion was held regarding hurricane impact windows vs. shutters.

Next Board Meeting - THE NEXT REGULAR BOARD MEETING WILL BE HELD ON THURSDAY OCTOBER 19, 2006.
