Homelessness continues to be an issue in our city and on the Galt Mile. Over a year ago, we took positive actions to address this issue. We coordinated with the county, city, Fort Lauderdale police, our Galt Security patrol, and the TaskForce Fore Ending Homelessness. I have attended “coffee and conversations” at our local library with homeless individuals invited. We have been vigilant in reporting incidents to the proper authority. Remember, it is not illegal for a homeless person to sit on a bench on the Galt Mile.
There are two new laws regarding homeless individuals. One is a new state law as provided in HB1365. The other is City Ordinance 16-32 adopted by the Fort Lauderdale City Commission implementing the new state law that took effect October 1, 2024. The new laws refer to encampments or sleeping on public property only.
The City of Fort Lauderdale will host a community town hall meeting to discuss Florida House Bill 1365: Thursday, December 5, 6 p.m. at the Beach Community Center
