Approval of Minutes - Minutes of February 19th meeting were not ready for approval.
President Rozema introduced Fort Lauderdale Police Sergeant Scott Russell. Sergeant Russell is in charge of the Crisis Intervention Group. He spoke of the homeless people and loitering in general. He noted that so many of them have either mental or alcoholic problems - or both. There are designated areas (homes) allocated for the homeless in Fort Lauderdale, Pompano and Hollywood. The governing officials had put a 1 cent tax on gasoline to provide some funding to these places. There is very little the police can do. They try to recommend to them different places of refuge - but they cannot arrest them for being homeless. It is a very sad situation throughout the country.
The Homeless Voice publication which is hawked on the street has about 130 people in it. They do not try rehabilitation. A Q & A period followed Sgt. Russells presentation.
