MINUTES OF GMCA ADVISORY BOARD MEETING
  June 18, 2015
The meeting was called to order at 11:15 a.m. by President Pio Ieraci at Nick�s Italian Restaurant.
Board Members present: : Ieraci, Berkowitz, Hamaker, Nesbitt, McBride, Abruzzino, Adams, Bazerghi, Bendis, Bibace, Bindler, Capriani, Cella, Claire, Cuneo, Fox, Friedman, Hashek, Kessler, Lewandowski, Matsas, Pohan, and Vega
Guests present: Fort Lauderdale City Commissioner Bruce Roberts; Fort Lauderdale Police Department Officer Tom Gestal; Laurie Madenfort, Galt Ocean Mile Merchants Assn. (defunct); Interim Executive Director Tara Crawford, Sun Trolley.
Approval of Minutes - Minutes of the May 21, 2015 Advisory Board Meeting were approved.
Old and New Business/Guests
Pio introduced Fort Lauderdale Police Officer Tom Gestal, who shared the following:
There is no change in recent crime trends.
Reminded us to deter auto burglaries - lock car doors and keep valuables in the trunk so they are not visible.
Enforcing new homeless ordinances, and deterring aggressive soliciting.
Since recently implemented two-man foot patrols have been both popular and successful, they will continue.
Discussed how designer drug Flakka causes excited delirium, paranoia, fever spikes, and death.
Pio introduced Fort Lauderdale City Commissioner Bruce Roberts, who shared the following:
Gave update on A1A projects; the 18-month Galt Mile A1A Greenway project is due to begin by August 2015.
The fire station project is scheduled to begin in August 2016.
Described various City projects in other areas of Fort Lauderdale.
City Staff Meeting regarding beach renourishment is scheduled for July 1.
The first public hearing of the 2016 budget is scheduled for September 3; reviewed various fiscal issues.

Beach Renourishment
While attending a meeting in Jacksonville, Broward County Commissioner Chip LaMarca confirmed to Pio �Yes Sir � the project will begin in November.� As information becomes available, Pio will share it. Each building will be impacted for about a month as sand is distributed across the Galt Mile beach. It was suggested that associations post notices informing residents about the upcoming project..
Galt Mile Reading Center - Terry Claire
Reviewed some of the programs being offered during the summer months, including French, Spanish and Italian classes.
Expressed that the librarian, Marlene Barnes, is excellent in motivating people which enhances the quality and scope of the programs offered.
Comment was made that libraries up north can�t compare to the Broward County Library.

Describing a budgeting measure implemented to curb our tax bite, Roberts outlines how microsurfacing will stretch revenues by extending the useful life of municipal infrastructure. However, unless the city can successfully address unanticipated misconceptions about the project's purpose, public appreciation for the ad valorem relief could be marred by a firestorm of disappointment.
June 1, 2015 - Broward Beach Boss Bags Brass Ring - After reviving the dormant Segment II beach project in 2011, former Broward Beach Administrator Eric Myers spent the next 3 years chasing the required State and Federal permits. Having won a hard-fought struggle with FDEP for a State permit, when his crusade for a Federal Permit was taken hostage by NOAA Fisheries, an agency in the Commerce Department, Myers retired - passing the baton to Broward Natural Resource Administrator Nicole Sharp. Joined by District 4 Broward Commissioner Chip LaMarca, new beach boss Sharp hunted the remaining regulatory brass ring � a Federal Permit to reclaim vanishing Segment II beaches. Since the high-powered politicians recruited by Myers failed to dent the bureaucratic brick wall that cloisters Federal Agencies, Sharp turned to a resource for whom the federal regulatory jungle serves as a playground. It worked. The Segment II beach fix is scheduled to begin in November! Here�s how she did it...
June 14, 2015 - LaMarca: May - June 2015 Update - In his May - June 2015 Newsletter, Commissioner Chip LaMarca adds another chapter to last month�s missive about legalizing Transportation Network Companies in Broward. The District 4 Broward Commissioner also describes County plans to open a Broward County Animal Care and Adoption Center that will house approximately 400 dogs and cats in a more comfortable environment than many of the homes they might be adopted into. LaMarca closes his message with an infrastructure update. Having rifled a quarterly asset management report filed by FDOT Maintenance Division, the Commissioner applauds the structural health of county bridges. However, the report also reveals some disconcerting data about those spans most often traversed by Galt Mile residents. Take a look...
Other Business
Ralph Hamaker asked about the new window code.
Ralph Hamaker stated that Tony D�s will be opening on 32nd Street and that parking may be a problem.
Fred Nesbitt raised the subject of water/sewage bills and the new water meters. Discussed sending a questionnaire to building managers and presidents to see if all buildings have been affected.
Pio: Regarding mandated back flow preventers � do nothing at this time. Bruce will look into this issue.
Laurie Madenfort observed that Galt Ocean Mile Merchants Assn. had been functionally disbanded.
Treasurer�s Report - Fred Nesbitt
The Treasurer reported a balance of $14,158.32
Invoices for the $250 annual dues will sent to member associations this week.
Adjournment - The next regular Advisory Board Meeting will be held on Thursday, September 17, 2015 at Nick�s Italian Restaurant.
