MINUTES OF GMCA ADVISORY BOARD MEETING
  September 20, 2018
The meeting was called to order at 11:15 a.m. by President Pio Ieraci at Nick�s Italian Restaurant.
Board Members present: Ieraci, Berkowitz, Hamaker, McBride, Nesbitt, Surdovel, Adjemian, Bendis, Bibace, Cave, Claire, Cous, Ellison, Hall, Johnson, Korn, Larson, Lowenthal, Madgett, Mosher, Papineau, Pohan, Sarelakos, Tripoli and Wenberg
Guests present: Broward County Commissioner Chip LaMarca; Melissa Coningsby, Assistant to City Commissioner Heather Moraitis; Candidates running for various positions: District 4 Broward Commission candidate Lamar Fisher, District 93 Statehouse candidate Emma Collum, Circuit Court Judge candidate Maria Weekes, County Court Judge candidate Allison Gilman
Approval of Minutes - Minutes of the June 21, 2018 Advisory Board Meeting were approved.
Old and New Business
Melissa Coningsby, Assistant to City Commissioner Heather Moraitis, shared information regarding width of sidewalks on the west side of A1A from 34th to 36th Streets; because light poles are lined up the width cannot be increased; however, a solid material will be installed in lieu of grass so the area can be utilized.
Pio addressed the following concerns:
Repair of former bus area across from Playa del Mar; pavers complete; curb needs inspection
Markings on sidewalks are temporary; AT&T will fix
If trees on A1A do not provide enough shade, the City will put in trees to resolve this
The new fire station is scheduled for completion in November
The missing buoy is to be installed by 9/27
Light Up the Galt flyers were distributed

Broward County Commissioner Chip LaMarca was introduced:
Not running for re-election on November 6 as term limits end his tenure as County Commissioner. He will be a candidate for Statehouse Representative in District 93.
Spoke about our upcoming library renovations and his involvement in the new library in Pompano Beach.
Addressed beach issues, beach renourishment, hot spot repairs to damage from Hurricane Irma, importance of beach being maintained as our beaches attract tourism.
Galt Mile Reading Center - Terry Claire
The library improvement plans are in place; the bathroom permits need to be secured in order for the renovations to proceed

Former Statehouse Representative and Senator Ellyn Bogdanoff is with the Becker firm as a lobbyist and will lead the process

Discussed articles that are inflammatory rather than factual and how/if we should respond
Ralph Hamaker shared that Coral Ridge South has spent $560,000.00 on the project.

August 29, 2018 - Aquatic Complex: Shrine or Money Pit? - Following decades of deterioration and increasing obsolescence, Fort Lauderdale�s swimming Mecca is finally being renovated. The City�s swimming / diving legacy dates back to the early 1900s before the Civilian raft moored off the beach at the end of Las Olas Boulevard was replaced in 1928 by the Casino Pool in what later became DC Alexander Park. Plans to bring the Glory Days back to the Aquatic Complex failed in 2002, 2009 and 2013, when the Broward Inspector General brought focus to a rat's nest of contractor abuses in collusion with city officials. A recent eleventh hour "Hail Mary" agreement balanced the concerns of supporters who view the complex as a shrine and opponents who disparaged it as a money pit .
September 8, 2018 - Heather Moraitis: Resiliency, New Budget - In her August 2018 Newsletter, District 1 City Commissioner Heather Moraitis looks at how the City plans to mitigate the adverse impacts of sea level rise with a series of infrastructure tweaks; invites constituents to attend the September budget hearings, visit her Pre-Agenda Meetings, serve on a municipal board and participate in her Telephone Town Hall Meeting. She also reminds us about the planned resurfacing of Bayview Drive from Sunrise Boulevard to Commercial Boulevard; asks that we Save a Life over Lunch; suggests using the free Neighbors App by Ring to enhance community safety; offers contact with the City through the Lauderserv app; and closes with boilerplate links for additional information. Of course, if those who marginalize the threat posed by carbon pollution are wrong, and greenhouse gasses irreversibly warm earth's climate, local or regional resiliency adaptations may be tantamount to shooting an elephant with a potato gun.
September 17, 2018 - LaMarca: Budget, Evacuation, Pets - In his August 2018 Newsletter, District 4 Broward Commissioner Chip LaMarca takes a look at the proposed FY19 County budget, noting how an increase in property values will offset inflation-driven expenses, freezing last year�s millage rate at 5.6690 � and depicting how the new spending plan impacts homesteaded and non-homesteaded properties. Three months into hurricane season, LaMarca specifies the category of hurricane that respectively mandates evacuation from each of two coastal zones; announces expanded weekend hours at the Broward County Animal Care and Adoption Center, and closes by offering constituents free resources for exploring local government and communicating with government officials. LaMarca describes a potential budget shortfall created by a proposed additional Homestead Exemption on the November ballot - which cloaks a poison pill for Galt Mile Snowbirds.
